Derbyshire chairman of cricket Mickey Arthur has shared his thoughts on the absence of Pakistan spinner Sufyan Mukeem for the opening half of the upcoming Vitality Blast 2026 campaign, admitting the county team were disappointed by the spinner’s absence.

In a statement released by Derbyshire, Arthur explained that Sufiyan’s unavailability has prompted the club to reassess their squad balance ahead of the new season.

He also praised Pakistan fast bowler Akif Javed, who has been brought in as a substitute for the early stages of the tournament.

“We were naturally disappointed when we were told Sufyan would not be joining us, but it gave us an opportunity to rebalance our line-up and Akif was top of my list,” said Arthur.

“He’s someone I’ve worked with before and I’m watching his development closely because I think he’ll suit the English conditions,” he added.

Arthur also addressed Derbyshire’s injury concerns in the pace department and stressed the importance of adding international experience and variety to the bowling attack.

He described Akif as a valuable addition because of his left-arm pace and ability to provide a different dimension to the side.

“With Pat Brown and Harry Moore currently out injured and Lewis Rees out, we have chosen to add international quality to our pace attack and Akif is a left-armer so we have opted for some variation,” he said.

It is notable that Derbyshire had earlier secured the services of Sufyan for the T20 tournament. However, the left-arm spinner will be unavailable for the first half of the tournament due to international commitments.

Akif has represented the Pakistan national cricket team in three ODIs, taking seven wickets at an average of 23.57, including an impressive four-wicket haul.

The 25-year-old left-arm fast bowler brings considerable franchise experience, having featured in both the Pakistan Super League and Bangladesh Premier League.

In five PSL seasons representing four different franchises, Akif has taken 34 wickets in 27 matches.

He has enjoyed success in the BPL, where he has taken 28 wickets in 19 appearances across three editions, underlining his credentials as an experienced T20 bowler prior to his stint with Derbyshire.
