KARACHI: Former champions Islamabad United suffered a major scare during the net session at the Hanif Mohammad High Performance Center on Tuesday when Mir Hamza Sajjad was hit on the head by the ball and briefly lost consciousness.
The incident occurred when New Zealand batsman Mark Chapman, now a member of the United team, bowled a shot. The ball hit Hamza Sajjad on the back of the head, knocking him down.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination. Sources confirm that Mir Hamza Sajjad is now conscious, bio- and hemodynamically stable.
As a precaution, a CT scan is done soon to rule out any underlying injuries.
The accident created a somber mood in the Islamabad United camp, with training halted immediately and players and support staff visibly distressed.
While the news of Hamza Sajjad’s stable health brought relief to the team players and supporters, the team management is yet to make an official announcement.
Notably, the young fast bowler has a promising T20 career. So far he has played 6 T20 matches and taken 8 wickets. He has taken 25 wickets in eight first-class matches.
The Gujarat-born right-arm fast bowler was picked up by United Army in the first ever PSL players’ auction for PKR 70 lakh and is yet to make his PSL debut.
On the points table, Shadab Khan-led Islamabad United are currently third, having won two, lost one and washed out one match, collecting five points with a healthy net run rate of 1.055.
They will face defending champions Lahore Qalandars in the fifth PSL 11 match at the National Bank Stadium on Thursday.
