KARACHI: Debutant Rawalpindis on Wednesday announced the signing of former Australian opener Usman Khawaja for the much-anticipated Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11, which is set to take place on Thursday.
Khawaja, who has represented Australia in nine T20Is, went unsold in the historic players’ auction last month despite an encouraging spell with Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL) this year, during which he scored 108 runs in three innings.
However, the 39-year-old has now earned a call-up to the historic 11th marquee league, which will feature eight teams for the first time after a significant expansion with two new teams – Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindis.
Khawaja replaces Larry Evans in Rawalpindi’s squad as the newcomers begin their PSL 11 campaign when they take on former champions Peshawar Zalmi in Lahore on Saturday.
“(Usman Khawaja ) joins The Bindis! World class batsman with top level experience replaces Larry Evans. Welcome to Bindi, Uszi,” the franchise wrote on social media.
The upcoming game against Rawalpindi will be Khawaja’s second PSL appearance as the opening batsman previously represented Islamabad United in the 2021 edition, during which he amassed 246 runs in seven innings at a remarkable average of 49.20 and a strike rate of 152.79.
Updated Rawalpindi’s Squad:
Mohammad Rizwan (catch), Sam Billings, Jalat Khan, Yasir Khan, Naseem Shah, Rishad Hossain, Daryl Mitchell, Mohammad Amir, Cole Mackenzie, Abdullah Fazal, Amat Butt, Dian Forrester, Usman Khawaja, Asif Afridi, Kamran Khan, Sawad Khan Ghulam Masood.
