LAHORE: Australian player Marnus Labuschagne, who will captain the newly formed Hyderabad Kingsmen in the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has outlined his philosophy of building personal confidence over tactical complexity.
Speaking at the recent captains’ conference, the 31-year-old reflected on his leadership style, with the right to debut insisting his approach will reflect the environment he fosters for his state team in Australia.
“We haven’t talked much in depth. For us, it’s about the individuals—the players will be themselves. I’ll try to guide them in the same way I do for my state side at home,” Labuschagne said.
Noting that independence and mutual trust are fundamental to collective success, he stressed the importance of empowering players to believe in their abilities.
“I think it’s empowering for players to believe in their abilities and go out there to show how good they are,” he added.
Despite his limited experience in T20 international cricket, Labuschagne dismissed the idea that the pressures of a high-profile franchise match are different from other competitions. He said expectations remain the same at all levels of the game.
“No, I think any team you play in—whether it’s PSL, BBL or Australia—there’s always pressure and I don’t think that’s changing,” he said.
Expressing his excitement for the opportunities presented by the new franchise, Labuschagne concluded by describing the season as a significant platform for both personal growth and team development.
“I think it’s an exciting new chapter for the Kingsmen to be part of the PSL this season with a new franchise. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your talent on the biggest stage,” he said.
The upcoming PSL season represents a major expansion, with eight teams participating for the first time.
The tournament is scheduled to be held from March 26 to May 3, with the newly added Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindis participating in 44 matches in 39 days.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revised its logistical plans, away from the original schedule that included venues such as Multan, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad, and move the matches to Karachi and Lahore behind closed doors.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the decision after holding consultations with the owners and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Lahore will host Eliminators 1 and 2 and the finals, while Karachi is set for the qualifiers. There is no change in the opening match between Hyderabad Kingsmen and Lahore Qalandars.
