KINGSTOWN: Australia won by 40 runs in the third T20I against West Indies thanks to Georgia Wall’s brilliant century.

West Indies captain Hayley Mathews’ decision to field first backfired as the tour team amassed a mammoth total of 211/7 in 20 overs.

Leading the way for the visitors, right-handed opener Wall looked after their batting until the second ball of the 18th over when he scored a 53-ball 101 with nine fours and six sixes, which earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Apart from him, captain Sophie Molyneux and Nicola Carey made significant contributions with 25 and 24 not outs respectively. The two shared a crucial 32-run partnership for the seventh wicket, which boosted Australia’s total at the back.

Captain Mathews was the best bowler for the West Indies, conceding 3 wickets for just 29 runs in his four overs, followed by Jahzara Claxton with 2 wickets, while Zaida James and Deandra Totin took one wicket each.

Chasing a tough target of 212 to avoid a whitewash, the team made a disastrous start to the chase as they lost 3 for 33 in the batting powerplay.

After stumbling early on, Todd joined skipper Mathews in the middle and the duo batted cautiously to add 28 not out for the fourth wicket, which took West Indies’ total to 61/3 at the halfway mark.

During the drinks break after 10 overs, it started raining and no action was possible despite the valiant efforts of the ground staff. According to the Duckworth Lewis-Stern (TLS) method, the hosts were found 40 runs short.
