Colombo: R. The cricketing world reacted strongly after India comfortably defeated Pakistan to clinch their third consecutive group-stage win at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.
Batting first, India scored 175-7 in 20 overs thanks to Ishan Kishan’s brilliant innings of 77 runs off 40 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes.
In reply, Pakistan struggled against the tight Indian bowling and were bowled out for 114 in 18 overs as India won by 61 runs.
The decision sparked widespread criticism from former cricketers and analysts. Former Test cricketer Mohammad Yousuf shared his views on X and stressed the need for accountability and new talent, saying a change in approach was needed for Pakistan to not perform against top teams again and again.
“The time for Shaheen, Babar and Shatab is over. Pakistan’s T20 team needs fresh players, not winning against weaker teams,” Yusuf wrote.
Former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad has slammed the team selection and called for immediate changes ahead of crucial matches.
“Terrible cricket from Pakistan. Same old faces, same old results. Please don’t fool the country anymore. It’s still time to bring positive changes in this world cup. Faqar, Nafe, Salman should play now,” he said.
Former PCB president Ramis Raja criticized Pakistan’s batting slump and lack of development despite facing a familiar bowling attack.
“Well, it was a disaster—especially the batting! India have been using the same bowling against Pakistan for the last 2-3 years, but our batsmen have been woefully mediocre,” remarked Raja.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan highlighted the mental and technical edge India have against Pakistan in high-pressure matches, stressing their ability to consistently perform in all aspects of the game.
“India looks to intimidate Pakistan on the cricket field, they are very good in all aspects of the game & have a great mindset to tackle the big occasion,” Waugh wrote.
Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews shared his observations on the high-voltage clash, highlighting the atmosphere and the performance of the ground.
“It was lights out in Colombo tonight but India were too good for Pakistan. A convincing win by them,” Mathews wrote.
Test cricketer Abid Ali on the current state of Pakistan’s T20 squad has stressed the urgent need for merit-based selection and impact players following their recent performances.
“Reputation ≠ choice. Pakistan T20 team needs impact players, not passengers. Babar, Shaheen, Shadab and others need to earn their skills through action, not past glory. Fans deserve fight, not excuses. Time to reset,” Ali wrote.
