New Delhi: Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalized with a stomach infection and is doubtful for Thursday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia in Delhi, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
According to reports, the left-handed batsman has been admitted to a private hospital in the capital for the past two days.
“Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a stomach infection,” a BCCI source said.
“Some tests are being conducted to find out the exact problem. It is not yet clear whether he will be discharged today. As of now, his participation in the match against Namibia looks doubtful,” the source added.
Abhishek’s health concerns first came to light during India’s T20 World Cup opener against the USA in Mumbai.
After being dismissed for a duck on the first ball, he did not take the field during America’s unsuccessful run chase. India’s assistant coach Ryan den Toske later confirmed that the batsman was recovering from a stomach bug.
“Abby still has some stomach problems,” Ten Dosgate said. “We hope he will play in two days.”
If Abhishek fails to recover in time, India may consider starting with Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batsman recently lost his spot as first-choice gloveman to Ishan Kishan following a low score against New Zealand last month.
“More than anything we’re waiting for Abi’s fitness and that will open up some different combinations,” Ten Doskett said during the same press conference.
Meanwhile, India are boosted ahead of the Namibia clash with pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah missed the opening match against the USA due to ill health, but trained with full intensity in Delhi on Tuesday.
All-rounder Washington Sundar has also rejoined the team after recovering from a concussion suffered during the New Zealand series.
At the end of Tuesday’s practice he bowled in nets and faced throw downs.
