ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government on Monday ‘cleared’ the national men’s cricket team to play against India in the T20 World Cup 2026 to be held on February 15 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

According to the central government, this decision has been taken after taking into consideration several aspects including legitimate requests of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), International Cricket Council (ICC) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (PCB), several cricket boards and Sri Lankan President Anurakumar Dissanayake’s telephone conversation with Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mr. Mohsin Naqvi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shehbaz Sharif has duly explained,” the Pakistan government said in a statement.

“The Government of Pakistan has reviewed the formal requests extended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to the PCB and the supportive communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and other Member States. These letters sought Pakistan’s leadership in seeking a viable solution to the recent challenges.

“Government further noted the statement of Chairman PCB Mr. Amin ul Islam. We accept with great warmth the deep gratitude expressed by our brother nation. It reaffirms that Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with Bangladesh.

“This evening, the Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with Sri Lankan President Anurakumar Dissanayake. During their cordial and friendly conversation, they recalled that Pakistan and Sri Lanka have always stood shoulder to shoulder, especially in challenging times. The Sri Lankan President requested the Prime Minister to seriously consider resolving the current standoff amicably.

“Based on multilateral discussions and the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to field for its scheduled match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on February 15, 2026.”

The government further said that the decision was taken to protect the spirit of the game.

Further, this decision is taken with the aim of preserving the spirit of cricket and to support the continuation of this global game in all the participating countries.

“The Prime Minister and people of Pakistan extend their best wishes to the ‘Men in Green’. We are confident that our team will bring sportsmanship and national pride to the field as they compete for world glory.”
