KARACHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced compensation to Bangladesh, replacing Scotland in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup with hosting rights for one of its upcoming matches.
According to the global body, the settlement was reached during discussions between the ICC, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which it described as “open, constructive and amicable”.
The ICC said Bangladesh’s absence from the 2026 T20 World Cup was unfortunate.
“The International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have concluded an open, constructive and amicable dialogue. The dialogue covered a range of issues, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the broader outlook for cricket in South Asia,” the global cricket governing body said.
“While reflecting on the unfortunate absence of the Bangladesh cricket team from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the global governing body for cricket reaffirmed BCB’s position as a valued full member with a proud cricketing history and a vital role in the development of the global game,” it added.
The apex body further announced that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will not be fined or sanctioned even if the national men’s team is not present in the 20-team tournament.
“It has been agreed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalty will be imposed on the Bangladesh Cricket Board in connection with the current matter,” the ICC said.
“The PCB acknowledges that it retains the right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) if it wishes to do so, and this right is and remains under the current ICC Regulations,” it added.
The ICC further shared that Bangladesh will be awarded the hosting rights for one tournament before the ICC Men’s World Cup 2031.
“As part of this understanding, an agreement has been reached that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the ICC Men’s World Cup 2031, subject to normal ICC hosting processes, timelines and operational requirements.
“This reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s potential as a host and reinforces the ICC’s commitment to providing meaningful hosting opportunities across its membership to grow cricket in the country.”
The development came after a team led by ICC Vice President Imran Khawaja and PCB President Aminul Islam visited Pakistan for an important meeting.
According to insiders, the talks lasted for more than five hours, with all parties trying to reach a mutually acceptable conclusion. The ICC has reportedly responded positively to the concerns raised by Bangladesh, creating a framework to address its grievances.
During the discussions, the PCB played the role of coordinator between the ICC and the PCB. ICC vice-president Kwaja then left to get final approval for the proposed recommendations, while the PCB chief returned home to brief his government.
