The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the men’s U19 World Cup squad on Sunday, with Pakistan fast bowler Ali Raza as the sole representative from the 12 best-performing country.
India’s 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi is making headlines in the selection after a record-breaking campaign that saw him bagged the Man of the Tournament award.
The newly-crowned champions have three players in their squad, with Kanishk Chauhan and Henil Patel joining Suryavanshi in the elite ranks.
In the final against England, Suryavanshi produced a memorable 175 off 80 balls.
Chauhan impressed with consistent all-round contributions, while Patel took 11 wickets, including 5 for 16 against the USA.
Runners-up England are also represented by three players. After scoring 330 runs at an average of 66, including a match-winning century in the semi-final against Australia, Thomas Rev was appointed captain and wicket-keeper.
He was joined by tournament leading wicket-taker Manny Lumston with 16 scalps and Ben Mayes, who topped the run charts with 444 runs and scored 191 runs against Scotland.
Mayes fell one run short of equaling the highest ever individual score in the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup, a record set a few days earlier by Sri Lanka’s Samuditha.
Samudita scored 192 against Japan with 26 fours and a six.
Afghanistan’s impressive run to the semi-finals is reflected in the selection of Faisal Khan Shinozada and Nuristani Omarzai.
Faisal scored back-to-back centuries against Ireland and India, while Omarzai took 14 wickets, including a remarkable five for nine against Tanzania.
Australian captain Oliver Peake makes the squad after scoring two centuries, while Ali Raza and West Indies left-arm spinner Vittal Lawes complete the selection.
Raza took 13 wickets at an average of 13.92, conceding more than four runs an over, while Lawes took 10 wickets in five matches.
