Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie will take over as the head coach of Pakistan Super League (PSL)’s new franchise Hyderabad on March 26.
The news received widespread attention on social media and was later confirmed by sources, who confirmed that the former Pakistan Red Ball coach will take over the coaching duties.
The 50-year-old was previously part of Pakistan’s coaching staff and was appointed as the head coach of the Test team in April 2024 alongside Gary Kirsten, who led the white-ball side.
However, Gillespie resigned ahead of Pakistan’s two-match Test series in South Africa in December 2024 amid challenges in his relationship with the PCB and adjusting to the team’s management structure.
Hyderabad and Sialkot join as new franchises, expanding the historic 11th edition of the PSL to eight teams.
Hyderabad owned by Fawad Sarwar, Rs. 1.75 billion ($6,247,500) and won the franchise by winning the auction.
For the uninitiated, the PCB also confirmed the dates for the PSL 11 player auction, which will take place on February 11 during the auction workshop.
The session was chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and PSL CEO Salman Naseer and was attended by representatives of eight owners, PSL officials, members of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, PCB officials and other CAP players.
During the auction, various topics were discussed including base prices, team budgets, squad size limits, player retention and direct signings.
